Telecourses: Alternatives to "Pack Leader" And "Alpha Dog" Myths: Helping Pet Owners Understand Social Dominance

Instructor: Drs. Suzanne Hetts and Dan Estep, CAABs

  • Getting tired of people telling you that they have an “alpha dog”?
  • Need a better way to talk to people who think they need to dominate their dogs?
  • Not really sure what “pack theory” and dominance are all about?

This tele-webinar will provide the answers!

Following World War II, the field of dog training “grew up” on the philosophy that the owner’s role in the dog-human relationship is that of “alpha”. Supporters claim the relationship among wolves in a pack should serve as a model for the dog-human relationship. What exactly “being alpha” means, and what procedures are used to establish this role are quite variable, but at the least these ideas hinder the development of a quality relationship and at worst, result in quite harmful things being done to dogs and to the human-dog relationship.

So-called “pack leader dog training” is still shockingly popular – a Google search on the term returned 156,000 entries. While social dominance is a valid ethological concept, the popular interpretation and the scientific meaning of the term are worlds apart.

In the first class session, we’ll review the scientific literature on social dominance and give participants an understanding of the idea from an ethological perspective. How the popular view of “dominance” differs from the scientific one, and popular myths and misconceptions about social dominance (participants are encouraged to submit examples) will make for a lively educational discussion.

In the first two class sessions, we’ll review the scientific literature on social dominance and give participants an understanding of the idea from an ethological perspective. How the popular view of “dominance” differs from the scientific one, and popular myths and misconceptions about social dominance (participants are encouraged to submit examples) will make for a lively educational discussion.  We'll also discuss whether alternative ideas, such as leadership, provide a good foundation for healthy dog-people relationships and why a simplistic relationship model may not be realistic.

In the third class session we’ll discuss ways to educate both dog owners and pet professionals about the fallacies and dangers of “dominance” training techniques. Because many people – both dog owners and pet professionals alike - are still quite reluctant to “let go” of the “dominance is everything” relationship model, encouraging people to accept alternatives can be quite frustrating. We’ll discuss communication skills, tactics, and strategies to help people abandon outdated, harmful concepts and replace them with ways of creating relationships with their dogs that result in happier, better adjusted pets and people who are more satisfied with their dogs.

Here’s what previous students have to say about this course:

“This was an excellent course for me. It helped put many ideas I had into words that I hope/think will make people more perceptive and less defensive when discussing behavior issues. It also gave me "easy" info that I can pass onto coworkers that should help them also speak with clients. This is exactly what I hoped to gain from this course. I have already ordered the recomended book by Pam Reid!”

Lisa T.

“ I had a family emergency and was not able to participate Thursday. I very much appreciate being able to make up the class this weekend at my convenience. I truly appreciate what you are doing. In addition to being a trainer I am also a Tellington Touch Practitioner and find it quite challenging to not get emotional when I see what I feel is injustice. Many of your points on Friday reminded me of how to turn situations AROUND! Thank You so much.”
