When was the last time you took a step back, and really
thought about the behavioral information you impart
to pet owners on a daily basis? There are a number
of “core” ideas in the world of dog training
and pet behavior consulting that seem to be widely
accepted as “true” without question.
We think these uncritically accepted ideas qualify
as “sacred cows” - “ something
which cannot be tampered with, or criticized, for fear
of public outcry”. Until relatively recently,
the importance of being “dominant” over
your dog was a sacred cow, and still remains so for
a certain component of the dog training world. But “dominance” is
really only the tip of the iceberg. What other “sacred
cows” are out there that need to be subjected
to scientific, or even logical scrutiny?
In this one session webinar, Suzanne Hetts, PhD.,
CAAB, and Kathy Sdao, M.A., ACAAB will take a critical
look at what they believe to be “sacred cows” that
are interfering with successful training and behavior
modification, not only for individual trainers and
pet owners, but for the profession as a whole. To pique
your interest, one “sacred cow” we’ll
be examining is “nothing in life is free”.
Warning! This class is best consumed with an open
mind and a willingness to consider alternatives to
techniques, procedures or beliefs you’ve long
held dear. But the rewards are many. You’ll be
able to improve the tools in your toolbox, abandon
ones that are irrelevant or less effective, and come
away with a better understanding of the “whys” of
dog behavior you can impart to your clients.
You do not want to miss this class and the chance
to practice critical thinking skills you can apply
to any question, and to become a more rational, thoughtful
training professional. The more we learn, the more
we realize how much we don’t know.
