Whether we are trainers or pet owners, we want the animals
we are training to respond accurately, immediately, and
happily to the cues (what we are likely to call “commands”)
we give them. Once our pets – usually we think
of dogs - are “trained”, we expect “Sit”, “Down”, “Come”, “Stay” and
any number of other words to be followed by the right behavior
because the pet “knows” the cue/command and “knows” he
should do what we ask.
When our pets don’t respond as we want them to,
we accuse them of being stubborn, only “doing it
when they want to”, and knowing what they “should” do
but refusing to “obey”.
There are likely many factors that influence why animals
don’t respond in the ways we desire or think they
should, but one important reason is they are confused because
the cues we are giving them are unfamiliar and/or unclear.
This course will give you an understanding of the science
that underlies cueing to help you improve your ability
to choose, add and maintain cues.
We’ll start off by discussing the differences between “cues” and “commands”. And – do
you believe cues motivate behavior? You’ll discover
the answer in this course.
To decrease cue confusion, you must consider the type
of cue, its salience, distinctiveness, and consistency.
Kathy will teach you how.
You’ll learn when to add cues and several methods
to add them. Discover when cues can serve as reinforcers
and how to change cues using classical conditioning.
Effective training results in reliable responses to cues. If
your training isn’t producing the results you want,
part of the problem may be how you introduced and attempted
to maintain cues. Learn how to improve your use of
cues, resulting in better training, improved client satisfaction,
and better performance from the animals you are working
with.

Here’s what just a few participants had to say
about Kathy’s recent “Positive
Reinforcement: Beyond Food” course:
“This was so interesting. Kathy was a fun speaker to
listen to. So upbeat. I loved her energy. She had a way
of explaining something so that I really found myself shaking my head as
to say ‘now I get it and that makes so much sense’. Debbie
“There were several "wow!" moments
each week in the material. I thought the concept
of luring using food becoming a poisoned cue was remarkable. Thanks
for putting on such an interesting session!” Petra
With those descriptions we know you won’t want to miss this opportunity
to take advantage of Kathy’s in depth experience and knowledge
as well as her enthusiasm for teaching.
