Fear related problems can include anything from noise
phobias to separation anxiety to aggression. Many times,
fear related problems are not initially recognized as such.
They are attributed instead to “dominance” problems,
a lack of training, anthropomorphic reasons such as rebelliousness,
or “made up” explanations based on factors
that turn out to be irrelevant such as an owner’s
pregnancy, change in routine, etc.
This two session course will begin with a discussion of
the three components of fear, and how fear related problems
can develop. We’ll then discuss how to recognize
the signs that indicate a behavior problem is fear based.
Behavior modification techniques including operant and
classical conditioning, desensitization, flooding, how
to choose the best “tool for the job” and implementation
difficulties for these procedures will be explained.
This class will be valuable for any animal professional
who deals with fearful animals including veterinarians,
veterinary technicians and other veterinary staff members,
dog trainers, behavior consultants, shelter and rescue
workers, groomers, pet sitters, pet day care providers
and boarding facility workers. Whether or not you work
with fear problems in your business this course will be
valuable in helping you understand the nature of fear and
how to make fearful animals more comfortable.
When you register for the class you will receive information
about how to submit examples and questions regarding dogs
you have worked with for possible discussion in class.
We’ll also accept a cat problem or two for possible
discussion. We’ll be using our new presentation format
which will be webinar-like, allowing you to view PowerPoint
slides on your computer screen during class.
The course comes with class notes and recommended readings.
You will receive a link via email a couple of days before
