Telecourses: Fundamentals of Animal Learning

Instructors: Dr. Dan Estep, and/or Dr. Suzanne Hetts.

This five week telecourse is suitable for any animal professional* as well as the insatiable-for-knowledge, above average, educated dog owner. Anyone who trains dogs, needs to modify their behavior for any reason or needs to help dog owners do so must understand the basics of learning. By knowing how to manage the consequences of behavior, you can make learning fun for both people and dogs. This course will cover the four quadrants of operant conditioning (positive and negative reinforcement and punishment), including how to offer and withhold rewards effectively, and the criteria for proper use of punishment (both positive and negative). If you’ve gotten stumped by variations between other authors’ coverage of the subject, if you aren’t sure how to apply what you know in your daily work or with your own dog, or if you need a good review in preparation for CCPDT certification, this course is for you.

The fifth and final week of this course will be a discussion group. This is a great opportunity to review, clarify and ask additional questions about the material covered in the previous four weeks. Participants are encouraged to prepare examples from their own work for the discussion week.

The course comes with class notes and recommended readings. You will receive a link via email a couple of days before class. You can download the notes with the password provided in the email.

This course (with the discussion group) has been approved for 5 CEU hours from CCPDT and CACVT. You must attend either the teleclass or webcast LIVE to be eligible for CEUs. You cannot receive CEUs for listening to the replays

You can REGISTER HERE for just the Discussion Group if you’re taken this course previously and want to ONLY attend the 5 th week Discussion Group. The Discussion Group is approved for 1 CEU.
