Telecourses: Managing the Home Alone Dog

Instructors: Drs. Suzanne Hetts and Daniel Q. Estep, CAABs

One of the most common complaints that dog owners have is that their dogs cause problems when they are left alone. They bark, destroy things, house soil or escape from the property and cause headaches for the owners and their neighbors. These problems can be caused by a variety of different causes, from boredom to separation anxiety. The causes are often very different from what the owners think they are, such as spite, revenge or just “acting out.” Many dogs are labeled as having “separation anxiety” when in fact they do not.

In this class we’ll go over the various causes for home alone problems, how to identify the each and how to prevent, manage and resolve them. We’ll talk about different behavior modification and management techniques as well as information from the veterinary field about the use of medications as part of problem resolution. We’ll go over some sample cases to help you begin to think about these problems in a more critical and scientific way.

The course comes with class notes and recommended readings. You will receive a link via email a couple of days before class. You can download the notes with the password provided in the email.
