Instructor: Daniel Q. Estep, Ph.D., CAAB & Suzanne Hetts, Ph.D., CAAB
As you learned in “The
Nature of Cats”class
cats are quite complex creatures and their behavioral needs
often go unrecognized and unmet. Now that you have a better
understanding of cat behavior, in this class we’ll
put that information to use and discuss strategies for
proving a quality environment for cats, in both home and
shelter settings.
When cats are stressed or “bored” their quality
of life decreases, they are more prone to chronic, stress
related health problems; fear, avoidance and aggressive
behaviors increase, resulting in cats appearing less adoptable
and not reaching their potential as family companions.
This 90 minute simultaneous teleclass/webcast will build
on what was covered in “The
Nature of Cats”,
and discuss what makes for a quality cat environment and
practical strategies for creating it in both the home and
the shelter. We’ll discuss what’s important in the cat’s
physical environment, the social environment, as well as
the important factors of complexity, control, familiarity
and predictability. We’ll also explore training and
socialization as environmental enrichment techniques.
